Barcelona Day One

We hit the ground running yesterday, getting off to a good Gaudi start! Have you heard the word gaudy before? Usually when you hear it you are talking about art or design or architecture that seems somewhat over-the-top right? Well this word actually came from the architect/artist named Antoni Gaudi. He lived in Barcelona and ornamented the city with many fantasy like buildings, churches and parks. Yesterday we were able to walk about 15-20 minutes to our first Gaudi sight, La Pedrera or Casa Mila. Unfortunely, the outside of the house is covered due to construction right now but we were able to purchase our tickets online to tour the beautiful inside! We went right to the front of the line and began to wander. Here is a short video that shows some of the architectural features better than the pictures I took!

After spending about an hour here, we walked down Passeig de Gràcia to the Block of Discord. You are only able to tour one of the houses which is another Gaudi sight: Casa Batlló. We again purchased our tickets online, displayed them on our phones and skipped the entire line! This is really awesome because the lines for these venues are long! This house is spectacular, James and I were in total awe! It really makes you wonder what in the heck this guy was thinking while designing these places!

James could not get over the incredible tile work!

The blue tiles were all different shades so that when looking up front the bottom with natural light it all looked the same color! It was pretty awesome!

Pretty apartment doors, each with a unique golden letter rather than number to identify it.

Flat tiles can't be set on something curved so many were cut in different mosaics to fit in place.

Rooftop terrace.

Now we're off to see Las Ramblas and Park Guell!
